Postoperative Wound Dehiscence

Postoperative wound dehiscence refers to the bursting open of one or more layers of skin and other tissues at the site of the incision after an operation.

This indicator is intended to flag cases of postoperative wound dehiscence in patients who have undergone abdominal and pelvic surgery. It is defined both on a provider level (that is, for a particular hospital) by including cases in which postoperative wound dehiscence occurs as a secondary diagnosis during hospitalization, and on an area level by including all cases of postoperative wound dehiscence within the standard metropolitan area of the designated hospital.
