Postoperative Hemorrhage or Hematoma Hemorrhage refers to any abnormal bleeding. A hemorrhage can be internal and thus not noticeable or it can be external and visible. A hematoma is a localized accumulation of clotted or partially clotted blood. This condition is caused by the rupture of a blood vessel wall. There are many causes of hematomas including aneurysm and trauma. Hematomas are usually located within an organ or soft tissue space. This indicator is intended to capture cases of hemorrhage or hematoma following a surgical procedure. It is limited to secondary procedure and diagnosis codes for hemorrhage and hematoma, respectively, to include only those hemorrhages and hematomas that can be definitely linked to a surgical procedure.
