Prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate gland. This procedure can be done through an incision in the abdomen or through the urethra (transurethral).

The prostate is part of the male reproductive system and is located just below the bladder. About the size of a walnut, the prostate surrounds the beginning of the urethra, the canal that empties the bladder.

The prostate is comprised of 30-50 secretory glands each surrounded by many bundles of smooth muscle. The secretion of the prostate is a milky fluid that is forcefully discharged into the urethra at the time of ejaculation as a component of the semen.
